Next to the cafes & restaurants is the Kasbah. The Kasbah (fortress) was built in the 15th century by the Berber Warrior Moulay Ali Ben Rached to fight against the Portugues & Spanish invaders. Moulay Ismail turned into main residence in the 17th century & the Spanish turned into a prison when Morocco was a French-Spanish Protectorate from 1912 to 1956. Next to the Kasbah is the Grand Mosque with its octagonal minaret turning it into a unique Islamic masterpiece of architecture.
